Straker Wins At Longcross
Mark Straker won the NEM Mini Tempest Stages at Longcross on the 8th April.
This year saw the event running as the opening round of the Rally 2001 Tarmac Championship.
Mark lead the rally after the first two stages, the bright dry conditions aiding his Darrian T9 against the 6R4's of Dave Jacobs and Tony Janetta and the Escort Cosworth's of Paul Shelmerdine and Chris Wood. Dave Jacobs took the lead from Mark Straker on stage 3 when the Darrian started to cut out intermittently, the problem was traced to an electrical fault, the resultant time loss dropped Mark Straker to third spot.
Dave Jacobs lead the rally after stage 3, Mark Straker then took the lead back on stage 5, taking 6 seconds off Paul Shelmerdine and Dave Jacobs.
Dave Jacobs took 2 seconds from Mark Straker to take the lead on stage 6.
At the start of the last stage nine seconds spilt Dave Jacobs, Paul Shelmerdine and Mark Straker, it was all to play for.
Drama struck as Dave Jacobs entered the snake, the rear cross shaft broke which dropped the Metro to 2 wheel drive. The advantage was Mark Straker's who duly took the lead to win the rally by thirteen seconds.
Southern's other regular competitor on the series, Vanessa Steele finished third in class and 34th overall in her GpN Peugeot 106 Rallye losing out to Julian and Matthew Wilkes and Chris and Tom Powis both in Vauxhall Novas.
